  • Peringottukara Kanadikkavu Vishnumaya Temple: History, Location and Visitor Guide

Peringottukara Kanadikkavu Vishnumaya Temple: History, Location and Visitor Guide

When you have tried everything and the problem still won’t leave, where do you go?

For countless families in Keralam, the answer is a serene stretch of land in Peringottukara, about 20 kilometres southwest of Thrissur city. People walk into the Peringottukara Kanadikkavu Vishnumaya Temple carrying illness, family disputes, planetary afflictions, marital obstacles and enemy troubles. They come to Kanadikavu Shree Vishnumaya Kuttichathan Swamy, and the heavy burdens they bring are lightened.

If you are planning to visit, or you want to know the story behind this Lord Vishnumaya temple in Thrissur, here is everything you should know.

Who is Kanadikavu Shree Vishnumaya Kuttichathan Swamy?

Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati once travelled the earth disguised as pilgrims. In a forest ruled by the tribal king Marathan, Shiva was drawn to the king’s daughter, Koolivaka. Frightened, and wishing to protect her purity, Koolivaka prayed to Goddess Parvati. On the advice of Sage Narada, Parvati took Koolivaka’s form and met Shiva in her place. From the union of Shiva and Parvati, a divine boy was born, and he was entrusted to Koolivaka, who raised him as her own son.

He grew strong in the forest and tamed a wild buffalo that had threatened his foster mother. The buffalo became his mount. His trusted companion in those days was Karinkutti.

While still a boy, he rode to Mount Kailasa to meet his parents. Out of love for his father, he took the form of Lord Vishnu through his power of Maya. Shiva was delighted and told him he would be known as Vishnumaya from that day on. His mother, Parvati, gave him the two small sticks, the kuruvadi, that he would carry into battle.

    The Kuttichathans who stand guard

Every devotee at Kanadikavu knows the story of the war with the demon king Bhringasura. Bhringasura had a boon from Brahma that no weapon could kill him, and he set out to seize the forest and Koolivaka.

In the fight, Vishnumaya was wounded on the little finger of his right hand. From the drops of his blood, four hundred Kuttichathans were born. Ten of them gave their lives by swallowing the demon’s divine weapons. The remaining 390 Kuttichathans stayed with the Lord, and they form an invisible, protective shield around his holy shrine to this day. In the end, Vishnumaya struck the demon on both sides of the chest with his mother’s two sticks, and Bhringasura fell.

This is why we speak of the fellow Chathans with such love. You do not pray to one name alone. You pray under the protection of the whole family.

    Who else is worshipped here

Alongside the principal deity and the 390 Kuttichathans, the temple is home to Bhadrakali, Bhuvaneshwari Devi, Subramanya Swami, Kukshi Kalpam, Nagaraja, Nagayakshi and Brahmarakshas.

    How Vishnumaya came to Peringottukara

Our story in Peringottukara begins with a warrior named Konnacharyan. Centuries ago, the kingdom of Chazhur, under the Cochin rulers, kept losing its battles. The king of Chirakkal sent his renowned commander and Kalaripayattu master, Konnacharyan, to help.

Konnacharyan prayed with intense penance to his family deity, the Goddess of Kannur Kalarivathukkal. She taught him the sacred mantras to call upon Lord Vishnumaya. The Lord appeared before him, and Konnacharyan begged him to come to earth and end the miseries of his people. With the Lord’s presence, the Chazhur army won its battles. Lord Vishnumaya then established his presence at Kanadikavu in Peringottukara, where he continued to grant darshan to his general.

The temple has stood for 600 years of steadfast faith. At the time of consecration, devotees recognised the Lord’s divine presence when a sacred eagle, the Krishnaparunth, circled the sky three times. Ancient copper plates and palm-leaf manuscripts praising Konnacharyan are still preserved at Kanadikavu.

    The Thriprayar connection

There is a deep bond between our temple and the great Thriprayar temple. The Thampuran of Blahayil, who was in charge of the Thriprayar temple, saw a series of misfortunes haunt his family after the temple had stayed closed for nearly six years. A Devaprasnam, an astrological consultation, revealed that the Thriprayar deity was displeased, and Konnacharyan was brought to Kanadikavu to perform the remedies.

The Thampuran, wanting to test the Lord’s power, had secretly hidden a red-hot iron chain in the temple courtyard. In the final moments of the pooja, Konnacharyan announced that he knew about it. Then he fearlessly wore the glowing chain around his neck like an ornament. That day, the Thampuran’s doubts burned away.

The bond lives on in our festival. The Thiravellattu celebrations begin when a Kavadi procession leaves the shrine of the Lord of Thriprayar and arrives at Kuttichathan Kavu.

    Ten generations of spiritual leadership

The spiritual legacy of Kanadikavu runs through ten generations, from the holy Konnacharyan to today’s Madathipathi and chief priest, Brahmasree Dr. K. K. Vishnubharatheeya Swami. For more than seventy years he has dedicated his life to the service of the Lord and the welfare of devotees. His predecessor, the former Madathipathi, was the first to see the yogic radiance in him as a little boy. He grew up through rigorous austerities and penance. He has been honoured with the ‘Acharyashreshta Award’ (2012) and an honorary doctorate.

Devotees find in him not only a guru but a great heart that receives them as family. He listens patiently to their pain and gives new hope through words that build confidence. His message is simple: “Worship God, Love Nature.”

Annadanam, the offering of food, is carried out here daily so that no one leaves hungry. We welcome every devotee regardless of caste, creed or colour.

Festivals worth planning your visit around

The Thiravellattu Mahotsavam celebrates Lord Vishnumaya’s birthday and is held in the Malayalam month of Makaram. It runs for three days, with the Roopakalam, the Thirayattam of the Thiramannans, and on the third day a procession with Nadaswaram, Pandimelam, Panchari melam and Panchavadyam, ending with fireworks.

The Roopakalam is held three times a year. Devotees believe that going to the Roopakalam, worshipping and making an offering resolves their troubles.

The Consecration Day Pattu Utsavam is held over three days in the month of Midhunam, beginning with the star Uthram. Tens of thousands of devotees come during these days. The Pattu Utsavam in the month of Thulam is a festival of sacred song, when Thottampattu and Kalampattu fill the air.

The Aanayoottu, the feeding of elephants, is held once a year. On July 20, 2025, we held an Ashtadravya Maha Ganapathi Homam and Aanayoot with 17 elephants.

The pinnacle of devotion and hands that wipe away tears: the Kanadikavu Theyravelattu Mahotsavam.

In every person’s life, there are certain sanctuaries of refuge and solace. When anxieties and illnesses hunt us down, and the heart feels like bursting with the thought that there is no one left, having a sacred threshold to run to is a great blessing. In that spirit, there exists a holy festival where countless human beings from different corners of the universe pour in with their tears, and where earth and sky alike melt in devotion—the Theyravelattu Mahotsavam at Peringottukara Kanadikavu Shree Vishnumaya Kuttichathan Swamy Temple. This is not merely an ordinary festival of rituals and percussion alone. It is also the occasion when Lord Vishnumaya comes forth from the temple to see His devotees, to inquire after their welfare, and to understand their needs. Those who participate in the Lord’s lamp worship and ceremonial procession are believed to receive all of His prosperity and blessings.

The Dravidian valor that awakens the atmosphere

The moment you step onto the soil of Kanadikavu during the festival days, you can feel an extraordinary spiritual energy enveloping you. Sacred mantras reverberate in the air; the beats of chenda melam and ilathalam pulse with Dravidian heroism; the scent of gunpowder rises; and above all these, the heart-rending cries of devotees ascend. Here, Kanadikavu literally becomes a divine realm.

It is believed that the Shakta pujas and ritual offerings here are especially potent.Experienced devotees, numbering in the tens of thousands, testify that prayersoffered while meditating on one’s parents and gurus, in the presence of Vishnumaya Swamy—the guardian of the forest and nature—are never in vain.

“I am with you”: the promise of the Divine

When that heroic deity, who rode the wild buffalo to subdue demons, manifests in a form blending ferocity and valor and proceeds to the courtyard to protect His devotees, the ocean of people stands with folded hands in single-minded reverence. In that moment, as each devotee comes before that sacred form, pours out their sorrows, and weeps, the Lord seems to declare: “I am with you; I have taken all your anxieties upon Myself.” Such a vision gives devotees the unshakable confidence that even if the whole world abandons them, there is a protector at Kanadikavu to safeguard them.

Holy soil where afflictions are burned away

From severe family unrest and enemy-related doshas to business failures and all kinds of crises on life’s path, the Lord is believed to reduce them all to ashes through the prayers of this festival season. Offering all their inner sufferings at the Lord’s holy feet, every devotee descends from this sacred threshold filled with unfading hope and peace.

Whether near or far, it is not merely a belief but a lived experience for devotees that during these festival days, those who pray with deep awareness of the cosmic power at Kanadikavu find their homes filled with all prosperity and peace.

During these holy days of the Kanadikavu Theyravelattu Mahotsavam, let us too offer our hearts in prayer at that sacred threshold. May the divine protection of Lord Vishnumaya Kuttichathan Swamy always be our support.

  • The Cosmic Form unfolding in Colours :The Sacred Roopakalam of Kanadikkavu

The Cosmic Form unfolding in Colours :The Sacred Roopakalam of Kanadikkavu

When art and spirituality converge at the pinnacle of devotion, miracles are born. In such a way, the ‘Roopakalam’ is one of the most sacred rituals at Kanadikavu, captivating the eyes of the beholder in an extraordinary, mystical aura of divine presence. It is a vibrant, living sanctum where Lord Vishnumaya Kuttichathan Swami himself stands in his divine form before the fervent, heartfelt prayers of the devotee. For anyone longing for peace of mind and waiting for the dark shadows of life to be dispelled, witnessing the Roopakalam at Kanadikavu ignites the glowing embers of devotion within their soul.

Divinity Manifesting in the Colors of Nature

The greatest uniqueness of the Roopakalam lies in its purity and strict adherence to tradition. Absolutely no artificial colors are used for this. When this Roopakalam, drawn entirely with completely natural five-colored powders (Panchavarna), emerges in the Pattambalam (ritual hall), the temple atmosphere fills with spiritual energy. Riding upon a wild buffalo, wielding the short sticks bestowed by the Mother of the Universe (Jagadambika), and charging forward to destroy evil—when the fierce, piercing eyes of the Lord appear in the Kalam, any devotee who arrives there will unknowingly stand with folded hands in reverence.

The Melodies of Kalampattu That Burn Away Sorrows

It is the poojas (rituals) held after the completion of the Kalam drawing that touch the minds of the devotees the most deeply. Accompanied by traditional musical instruments, when the glories of the Lord’s incarnation and his heroic deeds are sung as Thottam (sacred invocatory songs), it does not merely reach the ears of the devotees, but rather rains down into their anxiety-filled hearts like the holy water of solace.

There is an unwavering faith that if one surrenders their haunting severe afflictions (doshas) and domestic unrest before this Roopakalam and prays, the Lord will instantly resolve them. When we look at that radiant, holy form and pray with a melting heart, we can experience the darkness in our minds lifting and a new path of light emerging.

The Heart-Melting Ritual of Erasing the Kalam

The most heart-touching moment of the Roopakalam is at its very end. After all the rituals, there is a ceremony where the Velichappadu (the oracle), who has invoked the divine energy of the Lord, performs a sacred trance dance and erases this Kalam. Though a slight ache may arise in the devotees’ hearts as they watch the divine form fade away before their very eyes, there is a profound spiritual truth behind it.

In that moment, the Lord is actually wiping away the ego within us and all the miseries that haunt us with His holy feet. Even as kalam is erased, that imperishable form of the Lord permanently takes residence in the hearts of the devotees. The self-confidence and peace of mind one attains when smearing the multi-colored powder from that kalam onto the forehead are beyond words. It is
believed that mixing this powder into the soil of one’s home compound makes that land equal to the realm of the gods (Devaloka). The sacred sight of the Roopakalam at Kanadikavu is something one must experience at least once in a lifetime. May that divine form of Lord Vishnumaya Kuttichathan Swami always burn brightly in our minds, and may it be a guiding light on the paths of our lives.

  • Divinity that flows beyond Prayers; The services of Kanadikavu Charitable Trust

Divinity that flows beyond Prayers; The services of Kanadikavu Charitable Trust

Devotion is not merely standing with folded hands at the sacred threshold or offering rituals; there is also a place that reminds us that it means wiping the tears of fellow beings and becoming a support for the hungry. This is the Peringottukara Kanadikavu Temple Trust. When the Lord Vishnumaya Swamy’s infinite compassion fills the sanctum as the resonance of mantras, outside that threshold it flows forth as charitable activities that shelter thousands of the poor.

The noble vision of the temple muttadhipathi, Brahmashree Dr. K. K. Vishnubharatiya Swamikal—that“whether those who come to His presence are rich or poor, all must receive equal peace of mind and solace”—is the driving force behind every activity of this Trust.

The sacred merit of annadanam that silences the call of hunger

One of the most sacred observances of the Kanadikavu Trust is the daily breakfast and annadanam (offering of food). Not only for devotees who come for darshan at the temple, but for any humanbeing who arrives hungry and weary,a feast akin to ambrosia is prepared here. Believing in the principle that “God is most pleased when the belly of the hungry is filled” this annadanam pandal, where food is lovingly served to all irrespective of caste or creed,is the most compassionate face of Kanadikavu.

Medical and educational aid that wipes away tears

The Kanadikavu Charitable Trust provides monthly financial assistance for medical treatment to countless impoverished families who are suffering from illnesses and struggling due to lack of money for medicines and care. For those afflicted with serious diseases, this compassionate hand of the Trust becomes a great source of hope, preventing them from collapsing under unbearable treatment costs.

In addition, the Trust is always at the forefront in supporting bright students whose education is at risk of being disrupted due to financial difficulties, by providing scholarships and study materials to give wings to their dreams. The Trust believes that guiding a generation toward knowledge is one of the greatest noble deeds offered to the Lord.

Service to the afflicted and the welfare of society

When natural disasters occur or when society faces major crises, the Kanadikavu Charitable Trust does not stand by as a mere spectator. By delivering emergency relief and food supplies to disaster-affected areas and arranging shelter for those who have lost their homes, the Trust stands with the people. Moreover, keeping in mind Lord Vishnumaya Swamy’s ideal of holding forests and wildlife dear to His life, the Trust undertakes extensive work for nature conservation and animal protection through rituals such as Aanayottu (elephant feeding) and related activities.

Spirituality that the heart can truly feel

The devotion at Kanadikavu becomes even more meaningful when we directly see how every small ritual offering and donation we make at the temple is utilized to wipe away the tears of a poor family. The confidence it gives devotees—that there is a God to hear their prayers, and a community of servants on earth to give those prayers the form of compassion—is immense.

This flow of compassion is not confined only to the soil of Kanadikavu; it showers into the hearts of every good human being. May these paths of love of Lord Vishnumaya Swamy and the Kanadikavu Charitable Trust continue to shine as an inspiration to the world.
